Securing higher and safer timber production requires effective cooperation of forest protection and forest tree species breeding. One-sided orientation to eliminating disasters caused by biotic pests and abiotic agents eliminates only symptoms, not causes. The causes are not of course only improper tending, or neglect of treatment. A usable level of resistance to parasites is present in many species. Breeding for resistance can complicate overall breeding and experiments should be conducted only after detailed estimation of costs and benefits. Low emphasis lowers utility value of material, high emphasis lowers profit. Though special experiments for resistance are required, these can be used for different goals, including isolation of material for further breeding and determining the range and characteristics of resistance. Frequent mention of additive heredity suggests that resistance can be manipulated, as can some other characteristics. Long-term efficiency can also be obtained. Individual resistance responses, their models of heredity and epidemiologic consequences should be known prior to their extensive use.
