Resistenzinduktion gegen Virusinfektionen durch Kulturfiltrate von Stachybotrys chartarum.

Culture filtrates of different bacteria and fungi were tested for resistance-inducing activity in cucumber against cucumber mosaic virus. The culture filtrate of the fungus Stachybotrys chartarum (KS) was selected for further detailed studies in hypersensitive hosts. In vitro, the infectivity of viruses was not directly affected by KS. High resistance-inducing activity of KS was found after a fungus culture period of 21 days. The degree of resistance dependend on the concentration of the culture filtrate. Under optimal conditions, 1 day interval between KS application and virus inoculation was sufficient to induce resistance. To a certain degree, the induced resistance showed systemic properties and was nonspecific. The application of the filtrate decreased the local lesion number to about 25-70 per cent and the lesion diameter to about 15-65 per cent in hypersensitive hosts. A reduced virus content and a limited distribution in KS-treated, induced resistant plants obviously resulted from inhibition of multiplication and spread of viruses. After treatment of tobacco plants with KS, 'b'-proteins were detected. Application of chloramphenicol inhibited the induced resistance.
