A brief summary is provided of technical papers presented at a 1984 workshop that explored the role of structured lipids in the nutrition of patients, and of discussions of these papers that identified future research needs. Topics included the development of medium-chain fatty acid emulsions to overcome the disadvantages and adverse effects of long-chain and pure medium-chain triglyceride emulsions as energy substrates for infants and stressed adults, and the toxicology, metabolism, and parenteral use of such emulsions. Identified research needs ranged from the use of single cell and/or subcellular systems, to whole animal and/or human clinical studies.(wz).
