The report highlights the activities of the National bean programme during 1988. The breeding programme earmarked three out of twenty-five advanced breeding lines for release to farmers. These were G13671, Rubona 5 and White Haricot. Farmers' preferences were elicited and the results enabled more effecient variety evaluation. Angular leaf spot featured as the most important disease during the year, it led to significant losses in crop yields. Angular leaf spot was higher in beans intercropped with maize than in pure stands while common bacterial blight and rust were lower. In all cases there was no interaction between genotypes and cropping system. Strains of halo blight and bacterial common mosaic virus present in the country were identified. Measures to control bacterial blight were recommended. They include chemical control using cupric sulphate or cupric carbonate combined with a seed dressing and better seed quality production in dry areas with furrow irrigation.
