Efecto del raleo y uso de sombreamiento sobre la calidad de frutos de tomate (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.), del cultivar FA-144.

The main goal of these trials was to control the problems that the tomato cultivar FA-144 presents: small fruit and a moderate green shoulder. The location was at Curacavi (-32 deg, 25'), Chile. The first trial was in fruit thinning, (2, 3, 4, 5, 6 fruit/truss and one with no treatment). The second trial consisted in shading treatments (black cover, newspaper, cardboard, green cellophane and red cellophane filters and one with no treatment). In the fruit thinning trial, the cultivar showed a mean fruit weight of 121 g Thinning to 6 or 6 fruits per truss (4.61 and 4.94 effective fruits) gave the best results, with a mean weight of around 140 g, where most of the fruits were around caliber 67-77 mm. In these treatments the highest income, in ship an aerial exports, was obtained. The shading trial showed that green shoulder is characteristic to this cultivar, and should be controlled. The extreme treatment (black cover), allowed less green shoulder expression, and while it was a very effective way of reducing this problem, it would be very expensive. The cheapest, easiest and quite effective treatment turned out to be the newspaper.
