The effect of pre-sowing seed treatment and growing media on germination and seedling performance of pawpaw weeds is reported. Two sets of seeds, one, devoid of aril (the gelatinous sarcotesta) and the other with aril were treated with gibberellic acid (400 ppm), Conc HCl and distilled water and sown in different growing media - top soil, sand, compost, sawdust and a mixture of top soil and sand (1:1 ratio). Decorticated seeds germinated earlier at a better rate, with higher percentage germination and had better seedlings performance. Acid treatment also gave better performance. Highest germination percentage and vigorous growth was recorded for compost.
