Aphids are an important insect pest for wheat causing damage by sucking sap during seedling stage and act as a vector for virus diseases. Excretia, (a honey dew) from aphids deposited on the leaf promotes fungi development. The experiment investigated the possibility of using the Yellow Pan trap to reduce the aphids population in wheat plots. Yellow pan traps were placed on two sides of the treatment plot in five replications. The number of aphids was counted in the control plot, the treatment plot and in the Yellow Pan trap from seedling stage through to maturity. The highest population density of aphids occured during the tillering stage. During this stage the Yellow Pan traps were effective in reducing the aphid populative in the treatment plot, However there was no significant corresponding increase in yield as a result. This method, while not suitable for large scale control of aphids could be effectively used in forcasting the outbreak of aphid pests.
