Spot blotch of wheat, caused by Bipolaris sorokiniana, occurs in all Latin American countries and affects all plant parts. The pathogen is transmitted through contaminated or infected seed and can adversely affect germination and development of the root system or kill the seedling within a few days. The disease is capable of causing up to 100 percent yield loss. Integration of different disease control methods, although partially adopted, is being done in most countries of the Southern Cone region. Methods include varietal resistance, induced resistance, varietal management, soil and residue management, crop rotation, and chemical control. Nonetheless, the disease is still problematic and poses a potential threat to wheat cultivation in the region, mainly because of political, technological, and socioeconomic constraints.
