It was found that the degree of contamination of the Sava River (Yugoslavia) is within the maximum residue limits (MRL). However, the pesticide content in the sediment, seston and the fish has increased significantly compared to that in the water. Histological studies have shown that the cumulative activity of pollution in the Sava River causes disorders in the morphological structure of the gills of all the species of fish studied. An attempt was made to estimate the average level of pollution on some localities based on the degree of damage.
