Village leaders' attitude towards the village reading center as a communication resource of the non-formal education program in Ratchaburi, Thailand.

Results of the study showed that a typical village leader was of prime age, finished only the primary grade, and with a family of six children. The village leaders were mostly farmers with a mean annual family income of 51,497.17 bahts and they reside about 694.10 meters away from the Centre. Majority of them read printed materials, listen to the radio and watch television shows. They prefer reading newspapers and they usually read news and agricultural articles. They listen to the radio and watch television everyday, preferably in the early morning. They prefer news and agricultural programs. The village leaders seldom had contacts with the change agents in the village. They attended seminars and trainings about "once or twice" during the year. In items related to the specific general knowledge of the VRC [village reading centre], the village leaders had a "very high positive attitude." They also had positive attitude with aspects on general knowledge building, skill and value development and other objectives of VRC. Village leaders with higher educational attainment had negative attitude towards the VRC. Age and family size were not related to attitude. Those who had high income and lived far from the VRC had "negative" attitude levels. Occupation and attitude were not related. Printed media, radio, television, and change agent contacts were not related to attitude towards the VRC. However, the number of seminars and trainings attended by the leaders increased their attitude towards the general knowledge-building aspect of the VRC. The predominant problem met by the village leaders in the implementation of the VRC activity was lack of books and newspapers.
