In the last six years, in four experiments automation of milking was simulated with milking robots, using 86 cows at the "Unterer Lindenhof" experimental station at the University of Hohenheim. The effects on the productivity and on the behaviour of the cows were observed. Hereby the cows were milked around the clock, whenever they went to the concentrate automats and had not been milked for at least three hours. The results from all the experiments were similar. Summary: On the average the cows come to be milked 4 times daily; however they change the frequency from 2 to 8 times daily. The productivity of the test group is about 20 % higher than of the control group, in relation to fat content (4.0 % fcm). The cell counts are reduced in correlation with the frequency of milking. No negative correlations of parameters to the cow's fertility could be found.
