Effect of frond pruning on oil palm performance [Malaysia].

The study assess the effects of six frond pruning intensities on oil palm performance. The results indicated that frond pruning intensity had a pronouced effect on leaf ash content and leaf nutrient concentration of N, K and Mg. Mature palms exhibited highest ash, N and K and lowest Mg composition on frond 17 when severely pruned to retain only three fronds per spiral. The levels of nutrients were lowest in treatments with more fronds retained (i.e. lower pruning intensity). The results serve to underline the need to take into consideration pruning effects at time of leaf sampling on leaf nutrient composition when interpretin foliar analysis data for the purpose of formulating fertiliser recommendations. The relationship between frond pruning intensities and yield were also assessed. It was found that intensity of frond pruning had a direct effect on FFB production and that optimum yield benefit could be expected with maximum retention of green fronds.
