A study was conducted in 1993 to determine the effect of formulated sulfur and quicklime/CaO(SQL) foliar fertilizer on the growth and yield performance of mangosteen. S, Ca, as well as N, P, and K uptake of experimental trees were determined before and after treatment of SQL solution. Three periods of heavy flushings were observed in SQL treated trees during the months of Sept and Nov 1993 and in Jan 1994 while only one period of flushing and relatively few flushes were observed from untreated trees. Results indicated a signicant increase in the number of fruits/tree of the SQL treated plants. A mean of 86.83 fruits/tree was recorded from trees treated with the lowest concentration of 1:35 (1 part solution: 35 parts water) while the control trees yielded an average of 35.65 fruits/tree. Heavy flushing was further observed in SQL treated trees during fruit maturation. Flowering and subsequent fruit development were observed in some of the treated trees indicating positive response of trees to sulfur and calcium application. Initial results suggest future investigation and possibilities of exploring S and Ca application on the problem of slow growth and delayed maturity in mangosteen.
