Persistence of seed and a laboratory assessment of seed softening of five subterranean clover cultivars.

Seed of 5 subterranean clover cultivars was sown in 1981 and seed was collected by the end of 1981, 1982 and 1983. Residual seeds collected at the end of 1982 and 1983 softened more rapidly than seed collected at the end of the sowing year, when measured in a diurnal alternating temperature oven (15-60 deg C). Numbers and weight of clover seed measured at the end of each year decreased markedly with time. The estimated number of soft seeds at each May was considerably higher than clover seedling densities measured in the field each June.
