Strategies for control of sigatoka: the WINBAN experience.

The rugged terrain and large number of small holdings are major influences on control strategies of Sigatoka disease (Mycosphaerella musicola) in the Windward Islands. Applications of benzimidazole formulations (Benlate, Tecto or Sigma) are alternated with tridemorph (Calixin) in 15 litres of oil/ha timing being based on 1 fortnightly assessment of leaf spot levels. In St. Lucia, a spray forecasting system based on Piche evaporation data is also used. Effective control is maintained with 8-9 aerial applications/year. Oil alone is applied between these cycles to areas which require further treatment.
