Janiya J.D. | Moody K.
The growth of the hybrid, IR 21845-90-3a/IR 54, its parents, and IR64 varied with cropping season. Plant height, leaf area index, and spikelet sterility were higher in the wet season than in the dry season. Total tiller number, number of productive tillers, 1000-grain weight and yields were higher in the dry season. Plant height, leaf area index, total tiller number, number of productive tillers, and grain yield of IR64 were reduced by uncontrolled weed growth regardless of the cropping season. Plant height, total tiller number, number of productive tillers, and grain yield of the hybrid was reduced by uncontrolled weed growth during the wet season but not during the dry season. Yield reductions due to weed competition of IR64, IR54, IR21845-90-3b, and the hybrid were 61, 50, 31, and 35%, respectively, in the dry season. The hybrid was an intermediate competitor against weeds compared to its parents but was more competitive than IR64.
