Effect of seedling age and seedlings per hill on snail damage in irrigated rice.

Transplanted seedlings are often destroyed by snails in varying degrees. This study was conducted to test whether seedling age and/or seedlings per hill can be manipulated to reduce damage from snails. In 1995 dry season, IR72 was transplanted under snail-controlled and snail-infested lowland conditions. Four combinations of seedling age and number of seedlings per hill (2 wk-8, 3 wk-6, 4 wk-4 and 5 wk-2) were used. Single seedling was also planted for each age level. Snails were controlled in half of the plots while the other half was left infested with snails. Two-week-old seedlings were more susceptible to snail damage compared with 3-5 wk-old seedlings with a 7 percent yield difference. When snails were controlled, there was no yield difference among the treatments of seedling age and seedling number per hill at the yield level of about 8.0 t/ha. To minimize damage caused by snails, transplanting old seedlings (3-5 weeks) using high seedling number per hill should be practiced.
