A series of trials were carried out to assess the advantages and disadvantages of introducing mechanical grape-gathering by horizontal shaking into Sardinian viniculture. Besides comparing the economics of the mechanical process with that of hand gathering, the effect on the microbic content in the musts and the quality of the finished wine were examined. The productivity cost/ rations confirmed the machine's economic superiority. To maintain quality, however, prompt additional technological action was required to prevent prefermentation during and after gathering.
