During the last decade, the volume and value of frozen shrimp exported from Thailand have been increasing tremendously. In 1987, the total frozen shrimp export was 35,000 tons and valued at 5,615 million baht. The major markets for the product were Japan and the United States which were amounting to approximately 60 % of the total frozen shrimp export from Thailand each year. Approximately 80 % of the export was from capture fisheries and the rest 20 % was from shrimp culture. Nevertheless, the production from capture fisheries has a tendency to decline while the production from shrimp culture is increasing every year. Since 1980, shrimp culture in Thailand has been increasing constantly. The shrimp culture area increased from 162,727 rais in 1980 to 500,000 rais in 1988. Several farms have turned and/or are turning into the intensive method of culturing. With the present pace of development, we can estimate the the production from shrimp cluture will increase to 150,000 tons per year valued at 30,000 million baht in the next 5 to 10 years. Nevertheless, this depends on the world economy. Marketing might be an important problem in the future. This is because the volume of shrimp traded at present level is near to the estimated demand of the import countries.
