The four grasses: orchardgrass, Italian ryegrass, timothy and perennial ryegrass were harvested three times a year during 1977-79. The average nutrient content in grasses was determined. The highest level of crude protein was found in timothy and in perennial ryegrass, that of crude fibre in orchardgrass and in Italian ryegrass. Nutrient digestibility, determined in wethers of 40 kg of body weight, fed ad libitum, was the highest in the first cut of perennial ryegrass and in the third cut of timothy. The digestibility of the first cuts of all grasses was always significantly higher than that of following cuts.
