The effect of number of foetuses on growth of mammary gland during late pregnancy, was investigated in 16 ewes of Chios breed. The ewes were slaughtered at the 140th day of pregnancy, the udder was excised, the extra-mammary tissues were removed and the mammary gland was weighed. Protein and fat concentration were determined, as well as DNA and RNA in samples of mannary tissue. Significant correlations were found between udder circumference, udder or mammary gland weight and litter size (r=0.62, P<0.01; r=0.72, P<0.001; r=0.75, P<0.001; respectively). Udder circumference and the weight of udder and mammary gland increased 6.3 cm, 739 g and 659 g, respectively, for each additional foetus carried by ewe. Fat percentage and total fat content in mammary gland also increased with increasing foetuses number. Total DNA in mammary gland increased according to foetuses number, although DNA concentration tended to decrease. Total DNA and RNA concentration followed a pattern essentially similar to that of DNA. It is suggested that number of carried foetuses affects growth and development of mammary gland during pregnancy in ewes.
