Weaning calves from cows in the Kimberley pastoral herd and finishing them in the south west of Western Australia or on the Ord River Irrigation Area (ORIA) greatly increased productivity. This was achieved through: an increase of 30 - 40 percent in the number of calves produced from cows whose calves were weaned calves; and high growth rates of the weaners both in the south west and in the ORIA such that they were turned off at 200 kg carcase weight and fat score 3 before they were 2 years of age. The Kimberley animals finished in the south of the State grew as well as animals from the agricultural herds. Similarly the quality of the meat produced from these animals was equivalent to that of the southern animals turned off at the same time.
