Morphology and cytology of indigenous wild vegetable germplasm; 1: Solanum nigrum L. (Solanaceae).

Twelve accessions of Solanum nigrum L. collected from Isabela and Ifugao provinces [Philippines] were characterized morphologically and cytologically. The plants are generally glabrous to sparsely pubescent. The growth habit ranged from erect to intermediate to prostrate. The number of branches per plant ranged from 7 to 21. Petiole color was either green or greenish violet, white leaf blade color was light green to green. There were no prickles observed in the leaves. Corolla color was uniformly white. The number of flowers per inflorescence ranged from 6 to 13. The exerted styles were from 1 to 5 mm in length. The small globose berries were mottled green at the immature stage, turning to purple black when ripe. The fruits had a sweet flavor. Chromosome analysis revealed that the chromosomes number of the species is equal to 2n=24. Normal bivalent formation was observed in the 12 accessions studied. Meiotic behavior was generally normal except for the occurrence of laggards, early and late disjunction and non-congression at a very low frequency (2-6 percent). Pollen fertility ranged from 97.0 percent to 99.3 percent.
