Prolonging seed viability of palosapis (Anisoptera thurifera (Blanco) Blume) in storage.

The percent germination, seed vigor and percent viability were significantly affected by storage temperature. The best temperature level for storage was at 18 plus or minus 2 deg C. Results of germination tests immediately after drying revealed that the viability of seeds was affected by the moisture content. Prolonged oven-drying significantly reduced the viability of the seeds. Seed vigor was not significantly affected by the drying procedure but it was observed that the least vigorous seeds were those oven-dried for 48 hours at 30 deg C. Palosapis seeds responded to a critical moisture content level. Viability was significantly reduced when the moisture content of the seeds decreased to 14%. To prolong the viability, therefore, the moisture content of palosapis seeds should be reduced within the range of 20-25% by air-drying in an air-conditioned room with a temperature of 18 plus or minus 2 deg C. The seeds should be packed in either double layer of polyethylene bags, double layer of aluminum foil bags or screw-cap bottles and storage should be done at a temperature level of 18 plus or minus 2 deg C. The inabiity of the seeds to tolerate low temperature storage and drying to a low moisture content level suggest the recalcitrant characteristics of the seeds.
