Effect of sprout inhibitors and nitrogen fertilization on nitrate-N content of potato tubers.

A study assessed the effects of widely-used sprout inhibitors (maleic hydrazide (MH) and isopropyl-N-(3-chlorophenyl)-carbamate (CIPC)) and nitrogen fertilization (NF) on the nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) content of potato tubers. Both MH and NF significantly increased NO3-N with increasing treatment level, while CIPC had no effect of tuber NO3-N level. The NO3-N level differed between tuber varieties, however, and the level in the cortex was greater than in the pith tissue, irrespective of treatment.(wz).
