A study of pollination of coconut was conducted at the Pakuwon Experimental Garden (The Pakuwon Sub Research Institute for Coconut), Sukabumi, West Java. The coconut varieties studied were Nias Yellow Dwarf and Bali Tall. The study included the observation of floral biology the phases of spathe opening, male flower dehiscence and the female flower receptivity, insects visiting the flowers and spread of pollen grain. The role of insects in pollination was assessed by recording the species of insects visiting flowers, the visiting intensity and the number of pollen grains loaded on insects. Results showed that times of dehiscence of male flowers and receptive phase of female flowers in Nias Yellow Dwarf were longer than those in Bali Tall, while the times of spath opening were not different in the two varieties. Fruit setting was greatly affected by the bagging of inflorescences. Fruits produced from bagged and unbagged inflorescence in Nias Yellow Dwarf were 10.3 and 46.4 percent respectively and those in Bali Tall were 3.9 and 77.5 percent. Insects that potentially assist pollination in coconuts were: Apis indica Fabricius, India discolor Fabricius and Calliphora erythrocephae Meige. Apis indica carried more pollen grains than the two other species. Pollen distribution was done either by insects or by the wind, however for a successful pollination the role of insects was more important than that of wind.
