Extract: The hypothesis that potassium intake has an important influence on homeostasis of blood pressure is supported by a considerable body of epidemiological and animal experience. Potassium supplementation may prove useful as a means to lower blood pressure. However, many of the available studies are small, methodologically flawed, and of short duration. The hypotensive effect of potassium supplementation is probably small, and potassium supplementation may be most relevant as a mass treatment strategy aimed at achieving a slight reduction in blood pressure in the entire community. Several ongoing studies should help to characterize the role of potassium supplementation as a nonpharmacologic therapy in individual patients with mild hypertension and as a mass treatment strategy aimed at reducing blood pressure in the entire community.(author).
