A trial was conducted to study the relationship between laboratory germination, rootlet and germ length and dry matter, and the rootlet : germ ratio (values measured in laboratory) on one hand and the performance characteristics of winter wheat seed on the other in field conditions. The number of plants after emergence, number of plants after overwintering, and grain yield were taken as criteria of performance in field conditions. The relationship between the content of the basic elements in grain (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium) and the parameters of seed performance was also tested. The determination of the contents of elements in wheat grain was not proved to be a promising additional test for biological value, nor was germination itself influenced significantly by any of the traits studied. The dry matter of the rootlets and germs, or their ratio, determined when germination was recorded, was found to be the most promising additional test for biological value.
