A ten-week study on the effects of light intensity on the establishment of Toona sureni (surian wangi) seedlings was carried out. T. sureni seedlings were exposed to five light treatments namely 100, 60, 40 and 50 ( as a control in the glass house). Parameters measured included height, basal diameter and number of leaves produced. Weekly records of these parameters from one-month old seedlings, were made. The different light intensities produced significant effects on the increment of height and number of leaves, but there was no significant difference in the increment of basal diameter. The establishment of T. sureni seedlings was found to be best under moderate light intensity (40-50 of full sunlight). At higher intensities, the growth of T. sureni seedlings will be inhibited by stress factors such as scorching of the sun and drying of the soil.
