Tomato is a vegetable that has a considerable economic impact on certain countries where it constitutes a non-negligible source of foreign currency. To improve the cultural techniques of this vegetable and give an economic profitability, a study has been conducted at Yangambi (Zaire) in order to analyse the influence of four types of mulch (or treatments) which are Paspalum, shell of coffee, sawdust, Stylosanthes and a witness (bare soil) on the productivity in weight and number including the bulk of fruits of two varieties of tomato: Campbell 1327 and Ace. The statistical analysis showed a significant difference between the five treatments concerning the productivity in weight of fruits on the one hand and that this productivity has been higher on the soil covered with mulch than on the bare soil. On the other hand, these five treatments differ significantly in neither concerning the productivity in number nor on the bulk of fruits. A significant difference has been equally noticed between the two varieties of tomatoes concerning the productivity in weight and number of fruits. The Campbell 1327 variety has provided on average a productivity in weight and number of fruits two times greater than that of the Ace variety. However, these two varieties have presented no significant difference concerning the bulk of fruits.
