Renewable raw materials are used for two reasons: agriculture wants to solve the problem of surplus production by using alternative areas, whereas industry is interested in taking into account the increasing environmental consciousness. Besides oil crops, fibre plants are very interesting renewable raw materials. The fibres of certain plants such as flax, hemp or cotton have been used for a long time by the textile industry. Used for materials other than textiles the fibres must meet new requirements. Therefore and because of the traditional methods not being profitable, new fibre production methods have to be found. Crops withouth any tradition in Switzerland, such as miscanthus and kenaf, are also being investigated. Textiles, paper, and other materials are the main fields of application. Industry's interest shows the profitability of plant fibres. There remains a number of open questions about the correlation between plant species, conditions of cultivation, and fibre extraction methods on the one hand, and fibre quality on the other hand.
