The development of integrated control programmes that are based on the compatible use of biological and chemical methods has gained increasing attention by research scientists in many parts of the world. Studying the side effects of pesticides on natural enemies is particularly important when beneficial organisms are used as biological control agents. The present contribution discusses the development and implementatation of biological and integrated control in Germany F.R. and other European countries as well as work on testing the side effects of pesticides on beneficial organisms carried out by the International Organization for Biological Control.
