In a barley crop (Hordeum vulgare L.) the effect of edaphic drought on plant water status during its growth season was studied. The experiment was conducrted according to three soil water regime treatments. The treatments were: irrigate when the soil water potential (psi subindex h) reach -0.05, -0.5 and -1.5 MPa at the root zone, respectively. The effect drought was studied through the next variables: leaf water potential (Psi subindice h), stomatic conductance and dry matter accumulation (no roots included). In all treatments the Psi subindice h decreased as the Psi subindice s decreased and with the plant age, but in the driest treatment the Psi subindex h decreased two times more than in the other two treatments. Stomatic conductance (g) was similar in the treatments in wich the Psi subindex s was larger than -0.5 MPa; than one half with respect to the other two treatments. The dry matter accumulation in the wet treatment (-0.05 MPa) was 5 percent higher than the treatment two (-0.5 MPa) and the driest treatment was only 50 percent of the wet treatment.
