Growth of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cv. Negro-150 of an indeterminate climbing habit (type IV) was studied both as a monocrop and in intercropped with maize (Zea mays L.) to evaluate the effect of competition for light on the bean. In the intercropped maize, up to 85 days of age (flowering) the profile of the maize leaf area index was concentrated mainly in the middle and upper part of the canopy. In the associated bean, it was concentrated mainly in the lower and middle part. The interception of photosynthetically active radiation in intercropped bean, was greater than that for bean monocrop (up to 85 days). In the upper part of the canopy the maize shaded the bean located underneath, inhibiting the vegetative growth of the bean. However, there was no significant difference between the seed yields of monocrop (633 g m*-2) and intercopped beans (467 g m*-2).
