A facsimile edition of the Florentine Codex, a XVI century compilation of the customs and philosophy of prehispanic indians in mesoamerica was reviewed to systematize the ethnobotanic information. A total of 724 plants were classified according to the ethnobotanic categories proposed by Hernandez Xolocotzi (1978). These include medicinals (266), edibles (229), ritual (81), for industrial use (27), other categories (1 to 20 each) and several plants of multiple use. Several indices were formed based on common name, scientific name, taxonomic family and uses.
