Spatial and temporal dynamics of two spotted spider mites, Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari, Tetranychidae).

Within-plant distribution and population patterns of two spotted spider mites Tetranychus urticae Koch on field corn in the Sacramento river delta were determined. Eggs, immatures, quiescent female deutonymphs and adults of both sexes were counted on each leaf of all plants sampled. Populations of each stage increased slowly the first month of the season, then quickly rose to peak levels. Populations peaked between the sixth and eight week of the study, then rapidly crashed. Mites were aggregated on the lower leaves early in the season and on the mid-plant leaves towards the end of the season. Most mites did not reach the upper leaves. The results suggest that mite sampling could focus on the number of females on lower leaves early in the season.
