The onion seed obtained from threshing has impurities, mostly flower residues and seeds from weeds. In order to eliminate these impurities a flotation technique is used, by submerging the seeds in water so that the empty seeds, the seeds low in vigor and the impurities float, while the healthy seeds stay at the bottom. Although there is the belief that using this technique might alter the germinative capacity of the seed. In the Experimental Station La Platina, INIA, a two part study took place with the objective of determining if the washing of the onion seed immediately after being harvested, affected the seeds natural ageing rhythm. The first part of this study consisted at submitting the onion seed to different washing times in order to measure its germinative capacity, emergence and vigor immediately after being washed. The seven different treatments consisted at: 1) control; 2) farmers method (7 min wash and 3 h sun dried); 3) 5 min wash; 4) 10 min wash; 5) 15 min wash; 6) 20 min wash and 7) 25 min wash: Hot forced air was used in the last five treatments in order to dry the seeds (Hernandez, 1991). The present thesis corresponds to the second part of this study, whose objective was to analyze the effect of the flotation technique on the seed quality after being stored one year under normal environmental conditions. The field evaluations were emergence and plant development at the transplantation stage. In the laboratory, germination analysis at 5 deg, 10 deg, 15 deg, 20 deg, 15 deg C and electric conductivity test were performed. The results indicated that the flotation technique did not affect the natural ageing rhythm of the onion seed, because the difference between the control and the other treatments was minimum.
