The characteristics of Pirot sheep (Yugoslavia), with regard to production, have been improved by various combinations of cross-breeding rams of the French Merinos d'Arles breed, and then of the German Wuerttemberger breed. The following are the characteristics of the newly created Pirot enriched breed: average in size, horned and hornless, covered well fine wool, lively. After first fleecing, 4 kg of unwashed wool per sheep is attained, and 3.5 kg for the rest (adult rams give twice more). It has cotted fleece with all the quality characteristics of medium fine merino wool. During lactation of 150 days it gives 80-90 liters of milk. Ten percent of the lambs are twins. This breed is resistent to harsh conditions of breeding, moderate with regard to nutrition, able to walk for long distances over mountain terrains and rocky grounds (properties of original grounds).
