Bacteriologic profile of the vagina and uterus of postpartum dairy cows.

Ten postpartum dairy cows were used to obtain vaginal and uterine samples through the use of locally-made endometrial swabs. The sampling was done on regular weekly intervals from week 1 to week 9 postpartum to isolate and identify the bacterial organisms present in the vagina and uterus of postpartum dairy cows. The sampling was done on a repetitive scheme to monitor the extent and duration of the bacterial infection during the postpartum period. Thirteen bacterial organisms were isolated from the vagina and 15 were isolated from the uterus. The five most common bacterial isolates from the vagina were Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus sp., Bacillus sp., Streptococcus sp. and Micrococcus sp.. From the uterus, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus sp. Corynebacterium sp., Micrococcus sp. and Bacillus sp. were the most frequent. The bacterial organisms persisted both in the vagina and uterus throughout the sampling period, but the percentage of bacterial infection in the uterus decreased from week 1 to week 9 postpartum. The percentage of bacterial infection in the vagina remained high until the last week of the sampling period. No general pattern was observed regarding the occurrence of bacteria in the vagina and uterus of the ten postpartum dairy cows used.
