The safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) requires optimum usage of irrigation water. In the Yaqui Valley this crop is usually late planted, because the water is destinated primarily to wheat irrigation. The objective of this study was to observe the response of irrigation dates, based on phenology of safflower. The experiment was established during the fall and winter of 1983-84 at the Agricultural Experiment station of the Yaqui Valley, on clay soil. Twelve irrigation treatments were evaluated based on phenology of safflower. Gila safflower was planted on December 9 (optimum planting date) and January 25 (late planting). The results obtained were as follows: the best treatment was number 11 with irrigation, at planting, pre-blooming in the two planting dates. The check treatment 0-50-30-30 (days of irrigation) was statistically similar to the treatment 11 in the 9th of December planting date, but does not fit to the late planting date of January 25th. The best planting date was december 9th with a yield of 2,230 kg/ha as compared to 1,503 kg/ha with the late planting at january 25th.
