The iodine value (IV) can be used in the mass screening of oil palms, E. guineensis, in search for a palm with an oil of high unsaturated fatty acid (UFA) content. This is because in palm oil, increase in UFA content as a result of breeding is mainly due to the increase of the oleic acid, and hardly due to the linoleic or the linoleic acid. If a palm has an oil with an IV as high as the one in a hybrid of E. oleifera x E. guineensis, then there is a strong reason to select the palm for multiplication through tissue culture, because the hybrid oil always has a much higher UFA content than the E. guineensis oil. The IV in the hybrid of the work is 57, and this equals to 50.5 percent UFA content as determined by gas chromatographic analysis. Hence a rough relationship is proposed between IV and UFA content, i.e., IV 50, plus minus UFA 45 percent; IV 55, plus minus UFA 50 percent; IV 60, plus minus UFA 55 percent; and IV 65, plus minus UFA 60 percent.
