The development of Fusarium graminearum was more progressive in virus free plants both under irrigated and non-irrigated conditions. The sugar content in the stalk was higher in virus free plants compared to MDMV infected plants until almost 40 days after pollination. Maize plants infected before flowering had a photosynthetic stress affecting sugar production. Therefore, these plants were predisposed to early natural infection by stalk rot pathogens and the development of artificially incorporated F. graminearum in the stalk was suppressed. Mean values of plant lodging and stalk strength were higher in MDMV infected plants compared with the healthy ones. MDMV infected plants have greater diversity index for Fusarium spp. than healthy plants. The number of cultures of Fusarium spp., isolated from the root of MDMV infected plants, was almost two-fold higher (72) compared with the root of healthy plants (44).
