The present study involves relation of conformation traits, total lifetime yield and herd life in purebred Holstein Friesian dairy cattle (n=891). Figures of a Hungarian seedstock herd were used for the investigation. The basic principle was to establish phenotypic correlation between conformation traits and herd life according to the withers of cows. Practical work at the farm was carried out by the same person throughout the period examined and was for 10 years, from 1983 until 1992. Type classification was made within one month after the first calving. Apart from 16 linear type classification scores (measured on a 50-point scale) four combined trait groups (1-100 point) were evaluated, as well. For estimating the parameters of the models, generalized least squares estimation, analysis of variance and regression of the linear model procedure according to Harvey (1985) was used. Based on the findings of the evaluation, from type scores investigated clear evidence was established for the relation of total lifetime yield and herd life, to dairy farm, rear udder height, rear udder width and teat placement. The rest of the linear conformation traits did not show a marked relation to total lifetime yield and herd life. By increment of withers relationships intensified mostly between herd life and several udder measures. A general conclusion drawn from the results is that the corrent use of conformation traits in typebreeding with regard to body measurements can we hope, improve herd life of our dairy cattle.
