Horticultural pesticide residues in water. A survey of pesticide residues conducted in the Mitchell Valley, Victoria, 1992-1993.
1993
Chapman R.N. | Stranger J.W.
Samples of surface water, sediments and groundwater from the Mitchell Valley, East Gippsland, were analysed for a range of pesticides. Pesticide residues were not detected in groundwater. Endosulfan residues were detected in 2 of 5 lagoon samples in concentrations that exceeded the Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council guidelines for freshwater. Atrazine was detected more frequently in surface waters than other pesticides, but concentrations were below the USEPA guidelines for water supplies. Endosulfan and atrazine were detected in lagoons within the vegetable production area and in the Mitchell River upstream, but not downstream from this area. It is recommended that targeted advice on the use of these pesticides should be provided to farmers and that monitoring be extended to other sites in Victoria to assess any risks to the environment.
