Investigations were conducted to study the effect of surface drainage on moisture distribution in soil and growth during the summer season. Groundnut (variety Dhaka-I) was grown in a sandy loam soil (old Brahmaputra Flood Plain) of the experimental farm of BINA, Mymensingh, Bangladesh. The soil moisture distribution was monitored by using neutron moisture meter and tensiometers under different field drainage conditions. Raised combination drainage system improved internal drainage as evident from water content and hydraulic head profiles. An increase in yield of 31.5 percent was obtained where crop bed was raised 15 cm height (i.e.l 5 cm ridge) compared to natural flat bed. Improved drainage practice showed favourable response on yield attributing characters like plant height, matured pod number, seed weight etc. Land having no drainage facilities reduced pod formation and resulted in poor quality of seed. The results demonstrated that groundnut yield and pod quality can be improved in medium or highland having surface drainage facilities.
