Relationship between light intensity and requirement for zinc in tomato plants.

Seedlings of Lycopersicon esculentum (tomato) were grown in culture solution under different light intensities to study the effect of zinc on growth, development, leaf chlorophyll and leaf zinc concentrations, and chloroplast thylakoid and soluble proteins in relation to light intensity. Compared with control plants, growth, development, and leaf zinc concentration of zinc-deficient plants were depressed under high light intensity, but unaffected under low light intensity. Zinc deficiency decreased chlorophyll-a (46.7%) and chlorophyll-b (52.4%) contents and increased the chlorophyll a/b ratio under high light intensity, but had no effect under low light intensity. Results of SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of chloroplast thylakoid and soluble proteins showed that the effects of zinc and light on chloroplast proteins were general rather than specific to selected proteins.
