Status of botanical insecticide research in the Philippines.

Eight indigenous plant species have been added to the 34 species previously reported as of 1985 to be toxic and/or antifeedant/repellants or growth inhibitor to at least one insect species of the 33 species used for bioassay. The most promising of the 18 plants bioassayed in the laboratory from 1984 to 1988 are Vitex negundo, Blumea balsimefera, Tithonia diversifolia, Coleus amboinicus, Ageratum conyzoides, Chrysanthemum indicum, Tagetes spp., Derris spp., and Tinospora rumphii. The effectiveness of T. rumphii against rice pests (brown planthoppers, green leafhoppers and rice stemborers) in the field is discussed. The potential for further and meaningful developments in botanical pest control is enormous.
