Biological warfare against crop pests.

Work of the Biological Control Laboratory has been expanded to include four biological control agents. The most common egg parasitoid Trichogramma evanescens West was found effective against the Asian cornborer Ostrinia furnacalis Guenee. It has been established in the corn growing areas in Mindanao and in Isabela Philippines where it was first released in 1983-84. Parasitization on corn borer ranges from 30 to 100%. The predator coccinellid beetle Curinus coerruleus Mulsant, was tested and has shown great promise as a biological control agent against the jumping plant lice (Heteropsylla cubana Crawford; Syn. H. incisa Sulz) of ipil-ipil. The beetle has adopted in areas where it was released. The fungal agent, Metarrhizium anisopliae Scrok, was found effective against the coconut beetle (Oryctes rhinocerous L.). Another strain of the fungus has shown to work well against (syn. Steinernema sp.) an entomogenous nematode, infected larvae of corn borer, coconut black beetle (Oryctes rhinocerous), horn worm (Agrius sp.) and jure beetle in laboratory trials.
