In growth cabinet experiments, the growth of all 3 species was greatly improved in aerated nutrient solution compared to aerated deionized water or rolled cotton towelling wetted with deionized water. Significant differences in N, P and K content were observed 7-11 days after imbibition. The results indicate that vigour tests which seek to measure the growth potential of a seed batch should be conducted under conditions providing adequate nutrition rather than inert media.
