The impact of four maize cropping systems on predatory insects and spiders was investigated between 1990 and 1993. The number of ground beetles (Carabidae) caught in pitfall traps was highest in the system with drilling in a rotovated band in rye (DBM). No difference was observed between the other three systems. Captures of rove beetles (Staphylinidae) and spiders were three times higher in DBM than in traditional cropping systems. The number of spiders caught in pitfall traps was twice as high in DBM as in the three other systems. Direct counting and a knock-down method by beating the maize plants were used to assess the densities of animals living on the plants. The densities of green lacewings (Chrysopidae) and of minute pirate bugs (Anthocoridae) are not related to any of the cropping systems investigated. In contrast, ladybirds (Coccinellidae) and hover flies (Syrphidae) followed the densities of aphids on maize plants.
